Mudgeroo Wombat and Wildlife Refuge, a unique and deeply committed wildlife refuge operating on the South Coast since 2014. Established by Belinda and Phil, Mudgeroo was created to provide care, rehabilitation and hand-raising for injured and orphaned wildlife, while also offering lifelong refuge to livestock and animals whose owners can no longer care for them. With a background as a qualified Wildlife Veterinary Nurse and Zookeeper, Belinda brings extensive experience in the husbandry of both Australian native and exotic species. This expertise underpins the high standard of care delivered to every animal that comes through Mudgeroo’s gates. In addition to wildlife rescue, the refuge operates as a registered business supplying emu sales and emu products, including ethically sourced emu feathers. These feathers are particularly valued by schools, community groups and Indigenous community members for cultural storytelling, dance, dress and craft purposes. In line with strong conservation values, Mudgeroo does not sell native animals or eggs for consumption. While Mudgeroo operates as a not-for-profit in practice, it is licensed under Wildlife Rescue South Coast Inc, creating a challenging operating model where much of the work is volunteer-based and largely supported by one full-time unpaid role. The refuge responds to wildlife rescue calls 24/7, receiving referrals from the public as well as agencies including NPWS, the Department of Defence, Animal Welfare League and Booderee National Park Rangers. Support is provided by a small but dedicated volunteer team, along with students from TAFE and visiting local school groups.
